Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Karate / Technique of the Week

Technique of the Week (November 15th, 2004)

From Sensei Kevin Reymond, Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu Midtown Karate Dojo, NYC, NY

--------------------------------------------------------------

The practice of Kata as we know can be performed in a variety of ways to develop technique and fluency. These include using weights, changing directions, going outside to practice on different surfaces, utilizing bunkai, and changing speeds. The one additional technique that I offer is to practice Kata blindfolded. By practicing Kata blindfolded all visual reference points are eliminated thereby thoroughly testing the deshi’s ability to perform the Kata correctly with respect to placement of the feet. In addition, the ability to achieve and maintain a solid foundation becomes challenging, particularly with the more advanced Katas that entail universal blocks or other stances where the deshi uses one leg. Add speed and power to the mix and the challenge increases. The step would be to practice our weapon while blindfolded. I would suggest that we all give this technique for training a try over the next week and discover another avenue to improve our Kata and skills.
