Chokuritsu-fudo-dachi (formal attention stance)
This weeks TFTW is on Chokuritsu-fudo-dachi (formal attention stance) discussed and demonstrated by Master Shoshin Nagamine in the Essence of Okinawan Karate-Do on pages 59, 63, 87, and more.
This stance should not be overlooked as simply an attention stance. It is much more...
We use this stance to LAUNCH our defense/attack in our first three Fukyugata and Kata Wankan, and to FINISH the battle (ready for more). We also use this stance in kata such as Pinan Sandan to deliver knockout power with morote-barai-uke (double striking chest and low blocks), and further in the kata launching into hangetsu-barai-uke (half-moon foot block). Moreover, we use it in kata[s] Pinan Godan and Passai as a fighting posture, launching into attacks.
Master Nagamine describes the feet as pointing outward at 60 degree angles. I remember from Hanshis teachings, that Master Ueshiro would turn outward his feet a bit more in certain stances to generate more soku (stability) and riki (power). I find that having the feet pointed outward at 45 degrees (i.e., 90 degree combined angle) provides that extra stability to generate more devastating power. Please see attached photographed example.
Research and practice this important stance, which we learned starting in our first class.
