"The evil attack others instead of facing their own failures."

This stunning insight by the writer Scott Peck provides a clear and powerful weapon for understanding the madness and motivating force behind terrorism and crime.

It removes race, religion, gender, age, and economics from the equation. It shows how failing to face failure is itself yet another failure, setting up a downward spiral towards nightmarish violence.

Yet it also suggests that where we eliminate failure we eliminate evil. Perhaps "failure" can be molded into something else: a learning experience, an accident or mistake, a reality check, a subtle hint, a twist of fate, a test of faith, sugar. Maybe our opponent got lucky and won a round.

Or, even better, we can conquer our sense of failure by following Hanshi's simple adage: "You never fail until you stop trying."
