Flashing Forearms of Armor
The other day, our deshi spent extra time working on the Pinan kata. Afterwards, I fast-forwarded the workout in my mind, and envisioned a praying mantis with flashingly quick forearms covered in armor.
Since our hands are tight when striking and blocking, our forearms have the feeling (and effect) of being covered in armor.
Since we move with deliberate urgency, there is an aura of flashing speed.
And considering the way we are constantly shifting, moving with precision, and adopting a mindset of fighting for survival, the image of a praying mantis locked in deadly battle makes some sense.
See what I mean?
