Consistent Symmetry – The Beauty of Shorin-ryu

The Nagamine quote, “anyone can learn Karate,” is true.

And one of the things that makes it so is the ingenious way the kata were designed so that the relative size, shape and form of similar techniques remain the same throughout the kata.

Here’s how the form of the down block one learns in first kata does not have to be relearned as the katas become more advanced.

The first down block we learn in F1:

The opening moves in F2

The elbow strike in F2 is followed by the down block

The above is true for the triple techniques found in Ueshiro Kata

The last moves of P2

The two handed down block in P4

The down strike at the end of P5

The block at the end of P5

Universal block in Wankan

The opening move of Rohai

Note the identical symmetry of all these down blocks.

This is true also for high blocks and chest blocks as well.

Research this well by examining your own form by using the most valuable tool in the dojo – the mirror.

And, most importantly – for instructors – be certain to relay this information to your students so they can pass it on. Remember, one day they will most certainly be instructors also.
