Basic Techniques/Movements
The normal sequence of training during a Shorin Ryu Karate USA
class includes repetition of basic techniques/movements near the
beginning of class. Basic movements consist of stances, punches,
blocks and kicks and must be performed correctly. The foundation
of kata begins with correct basic movements, and in order to perform
kata properly much attention must be given to exact execution
of all basics. Shosin Nagamine in The Essence of Okinawan Karate-Do
(page 57) states that three years are required to learn the basics
so that they can be blended into kata. Deshi attitude during performance
of basic techniques at the beginning of class must be just as
elevated as when practicing kata in front of a board of judges.
It is also important to provide new students with detailed instruction
regarding the basics to avoid development of poor technique that
carries over into kata practice.
