ONEGAI-
SHIMASU, please teach us.
This is one of the first things that we learn and in turn,
teach to a new student. The phrase is usually a verbal salutation
used throughout the typical workout in our Shorinryu karate
organization. I've utilized this (concept) word 10's of
thousands of times over the course of my training.
The Sensei or senior student as the instructor attempts
to lead and control the group with very little conversation,
sometimes none at all. Short commands or phrases do the
trick. Onegai shimasu begins the class. Our dojo rules ask
us to show courtesy to all before and after all encounters.
We bow with courtesy and ask those above us AND below us
in rank to please teach us and show us the way. I began
an after school program for 15 children K to 3rd grade a
f ew weeks ago. It still amazes me how I can convert total
bedlam in a gym to an energetic but controlled group very
quickly with a few commands and rules.
I still learn more from my newest and youngest students
than anyone else. It may not be karate or technique that
I learn from them, but I do learn about myself.
Domo arigato gozaimasu,
