Incorporating
Japanese Terminology into our Class.
Onegai
Shimasu Hanshi, Kyoshi, Sensei and all Deshi,
During a recent advanced class Hanshi emphasized the importance
of incorporating Japanese terminology into our class.
It is a given that every class should resononate with "ARIGATO
SENSEI (or Hanshi, Kyoshi or Sempai - whatever the case
may be). The title must not only be included, but emphasized.
The count should be said in a loud, clear voice and inspire
the group to move with energy and authority. The count during
the kata must have a certain cadence that matches the moves
of the kata. We should stick to Ich, Ni, Ich, Ni.
When performing the across-the-deck exercises, it is important
to try and use the Japanese terminology. As a karateka becomes
more proficient in their techniques, this proficiency should
carry into the knowledge of the language. Whle it may be
unrealistic to learn the entire Japanese language, which
is exceedingly complex, learning the proper names of the
moves is a realistic goal. It is extremely important not
to rush the instruction. Each word must be clearly enunciated
and spoken properly. There should be a pause between each
word. For example, when giving the command for natural walking
stance, left foot, left hand, high block, speak slowly and
concisely: "Shizentai-dachi.....hidari ashi.....hidari
te.....jodan uke"...., then give the count. The command
to turn shoud also be spoken very deliberately. The deshi
should all have a moment to collect themselves when they
hear "Mawate" and then move with power and purpose
after hearing "Ich".
When teaching beginners emphasize English and Japanese alike.
Those testing for one or two green tips are not required
to have memorized the Japanese terminology and it is perfectly
acceptable to use English. Please focus on this week's technique
of the week during class this week.
