"If you think you've got it, you don't. If you don't think
you have it,
get it!"
-- Hanshi Robert Scaglione
This classic "Hanshi-ism," offered during last December's
Black Belt
workout, sums up the core rationale for "keep training." It
gets us
out of the complacency rut and the self-delusions that lead to
stagnation. And it challenges us to always strive to improve,
regardless of our accomplishments or failures. Hanshi's directive is
premised on the belief we can achieve any goal. It is the same
conviction Grand Master Ansei Ueshiro held for his students when he
observed, "Anyone can learn karate." Arigato gozaimasu, Hanshi,
for
your words of wisdom, humor and Zen, as they inspire us to better
ourselves and SRKUSA.
Domo arigato gozaimasu,
Michael Mackay
