Can
you Name your technique?
This weeks TOTW is focusing on the name of our techniques.
Refer to pages 71-77 in the Shorin-Ryu Okinawan Karate Question
and Answer Book (The Red Book).
When we move up in rank, we learn new katas and new techniques.
It's also great to learn the names of the new techniques
we now acquire. When I open the Red Book (pages 71-77),
I look at all the drawings of stances and techniques, then
I make it a point to learn the names of each of the stances
and techniques that I train myself (both the English and
Japanese names). This helps to strengthen my Karate mind
and knowledge.
This even makes for a fun karate class with kids by shouting
out the Japanese name of a technique and see who can be
the first to show the stance or technique. You'll be amazed
at how many techniques you have learned over the years by
looking at these pages in the Red Book. If you are just
starting out in Karate, learn only the names of the moves
found in Kata Fukyugata 1. As you progress to Fukyugata
2, then go back to those pages and learn the names of the
new techniques you acquired in Fukyugata 2, and so forth.
