"Stances"
The foundation of our style rests on the stances of Fukyugata ichi. The
two stances, zenkutsu-dachi and shizentai-dachi support three punches; high, middle and
reverse, and two blocks; lower and upper. The kata covers all eight directions and when
performed properly, begins and ends on the exact spot, "positional coincidence".
I urge the students, all of us, to develop the stances to the point of reflexive action
"without thought" by continued study of the stances and repetition. This will
enhance every other kata in our system. Do this by measuring the stances, both length and
width. Use the fist to measure, lower the knee accordingly and check the stances.
Ask the Sempai and Instructors for assistance in this regard.
