Hips
Use of the hips in the delivery of a technique.
The hips put power into every move when used properly and naturally. When kicking, the
foundation is compromised (supported on one foot), where-by less hip is employed. In
executing all other techniques (target straight forward) the hips must be torqued as
follows (1) step first, the forward hip points toward the target, (2)the rear foot roots
down, the rear hip then snaps down towards the foundation (3) the technique is delivered
with maximum force through the target. The power traveling through the hips must not
dissipate its' force back. Not rooting down creates this common error. Twisting the hips
in a sidewards, east/ west rotation type motion disrupts one's balance. This sideward
rotation also torques the power away from the intended target dissolving the force
ineffectively off to the side. Speed of the technique is imperative. Step first, root
down, explode the power up from the foundation, through the hips, into the technique and
deliver the force INTO (through) the target. Instructors may demonstrate this action to
the beginner students for more clarification. Arigato, Kyoshi Robert
