KICKING
Kicking and the use of the legs for striking an opponent is
a common weapon/tool of karate. In our system the legs are used most effectively in our
snap/quick kicks as opposed to the thrust kicks of other styles. In the Okinawan
Karate-do text the kicking philosphy of our style is detailed by Master Nagamine on pages
96 to 98 in words and photographs, five types of kicks are described. In the 'green
book" on pages 47 to 50 we describe four specific kicks, including methods of
developing the kicks and strengthening the feet and legs.
The
'red book' offers answers to common questions about the kicks and includes
diagrams(drawings) and descriptions. We pay particular attention to strengthening the legs
and maintaining a high level of skill through vigorous and frequent training.
Important
reminders in employing a kick are proper distance (mai), balance and the quick return of
the kicking foot to maximum chamber.
